From the moment you pass your state license exam you need an insurance agent:

• Your contractor’s license will not be issued until you have a bond on file with the Contractor’s State License Board.  
• Most prospective clients will insist that you carry general liability insurance.  It’s in your best interest to have a policy, otherwise as the result of one unfortunate event you could risk losing everything you’ve worked so hard to attain.
• Once you decide to hire an employee – even if it’s just an occasional laborer – you’ll need workers compensation insurance.  And since that information is just a mouse-click away it’s not something that can be concealed.  (http://www.cslb.ca.gov)
• If your employees ever drive your vehicles you’ll need a commercial auto policy.
• Savvy clients will want to have a certificate of insurance proving that your insurance is up to date.
• Contractors who hire you as a sub-contractor will want to be named as an additional insured on a certificate of insurance.  And you will want to do the same for your sub-contractors.
